Dreaming is best characterized as thinking during sleep. We know more about dreaming and its functions than ever before. With a series ofpublications I have developed what I call the organizing model of dreams wherein dreams are viewed as centrally processing information andregulating affect in keeping with shifting needs and motivational priorities. With the use of clinical illustrations the central goal of this workshopis to facilitate the participants’ understanding and clinical work with dreams.

TEACHING METHOD:
Using a power point presentation Dr. Fosshage will speak extemporaneously and invite comments and questions from the audience throughout the workshop.

HANDOUTS: Bibliography/References

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this lecture/workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how dreaming is a form of thinking and includes a wide range affective/cognitive processing.
  2. Track closely the themes and metaphors of the dream’s narrative structure in working with a dream in a therapeutic setting.
  3. Define the use of a focused approach rather than “free” association in understanding a dream.
  4. Identify the presence or absence of transference in the dream.
