AEDP explicitly translates the concepts of empathy, secure attachment, attunement and transformation into refined intervention strategies that operate moment-to-moment in the clinical process. AEDP has a dual focus on (1) directly translating attachment research into the practice of fostering secure attachment, and (2) naming, tracking and experientially amplifying the specific moment-to-moment markers of positive transformation. This offers the possibility of naming and identifying specific intervention strategies that foster a client’s feeling deeply recognized, understood, safe and secure, which in turns activates further growth of the self. This workshop will provide therapists with a beginning set of AEDP understandings and techniques they can apply in their work, and compare with their own formulations and approaches.

A combination of lecture, power point, group exercises, case examples with Q & A.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define three specific verbal interventions to help the client stay “dropped down” and focused on experiential exploration of emotion when the urge to explain overtakes the therapist or client.
  2. Explain what to look for when tracking non-verbal, somatic cues in the patient and three ways to utilize somatically focused “right brain to right brain” interventions in the service of facilitating secure attachment.
  3. Describe  how to apply the foundational AEDP technique of meta-processing to guide moment-to-moment work in the session.
  4. List three ways to safely share their own emotional experience in ways that deepen rather than to divert from the healing process.

Matt Fried, Ph.D. has been practicing psychotherapy for over four decades. He is a certified AEDP Therapist and Supervisor and Coordinates the AEDP Communities in Toronto and in New York City. He also co-chairs the AEDP Diversity Committee, which extends lo-cost and no-cost AEDP Training to therapists working with or from marginalized or under-represented populations, including therapists working in agency settings with severely compromised patients.
