Distinguishing bipolar disorder from depression and borderline personality is one of the most difficult tasks clinicians face in everyday practice. This seminar will provide clinicians with a/our part diagnostic method to distinguish patients with borderline personality and unipolar depression from those with bipolar illness. Drawing on empirically tested research and psychodynamic studies, Dr. Quinn will discuss the many ways that clinicians can help patients and their families struggling with bipolar illness. Evidence based psychotherapies will be discussed. Participants will learn why antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics should not form the foundation of treatment for bipolar illness.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will demonstrate learning by being able to:
- List the signs of current depressive mixed states and past history of hypomania.
- Identify the four lines of clinical evidence that must be assessed to identify patients with bipolar spectrum illnesses and to distinguish them from those with unipolar depression.
- Cite evidence demonstrating why antidepressants, Lamictal, and atypical Antipsychotics should not form the foundation of treatment for bipolar patients.
- Describe ways to help the bipolar patient accept the diagnosis of bipolar illness and the need for mood stabilizing medications.
- Describe ways to work with the psychiatric consultant regarding the diagnosis of bipolar illness and the need for mood stabilizing medation.
