Many couples presenting for couples therapy complain of sexual issues such as discrepancies in desire, lack of attraction or sexual incompatibility, arousal or orgasm problems, challenges in the bedroom after having children, and infidelity.  From the perspective of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), such complaints are often, but not always, part of an underlying lack of security and bond in the relationship caused by the negative cycle between partners.  At times, as the partners de-escalate and become more secure, sexual issues remain unresolved. There is an increasing need for an integrated approach to couple and sex therapy. However, many couple therapists lack knowledge and skill in the area of sex assessment and intervention. This workshop will demonstrate ways to assess sexual problems and to intervene by   integrating sex therapy with Emotional Focused Therapy for couples.

Teaching Methods: Combination of Lecture, Power point, Group Discussion and Case Examples with videotape of live couple sessions, Q & A

HANDOUTS: Bibliography/References

After attending this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain techniques used for sexual assessment in EFT treatment.
  2. Identify negative cycle interactions regarding sexual issues in EFT treatment.
  3. List four strategies used to integrate sex therapy into EFT for couples.
  4. Define two to three ways to create more emotionally secure bonding in couples and discuss ways this may lead to greater sexual fulfillment.
