Over a career of nearly forty years, Selma Fraiberg’s integration of social work and psychoanalysis had a profound impact on infant mental health, child development, psychoanalysis and the larger community. In the first portion of this workshop, Joel Kanter will present his extensive research into Fraiberg’s life and work. This presentation, using video excerpts and audio recordings, will out line her career arc: its beginning in groupwork with disadvantaged children, her unconventional training in psychoanalysis, her recognition as a child analyst, her work with congenitally blind children, her ground breaking innovations in infant mental health and, of course, her prolific writings in psychoanalytic, psychiatric and socialwork journals, literar and popular magazines, and her classicwork, The Magic Years.

Teaching Methods:  A 15 minute video will be shown of Selma Fraiberg discussing her infant mental health program followed by audience participation.
