Increasingly distance treatment is seen as holding a shimmering innovative promise of psychoanalytic treatment with anyone, anywhere, anytime. Many clinicians currently practice as though distance treatment via screen or speaker is where psychoanalysis and technological innovation intersect. Such technologically-mediated treatments suggests democratization, continuity, convenience and cost-effectiveness. And why shouldn’t what takes place on screen be treated as a good-enough replacement for in-person care? After all, it often feels the same. But emerging scholarship reveals significant problems with this point of view.

In this presentation participants will grapple with clinical decisions from this more informed perspective, one that takes seriously the illusions technology is designed to create. It will argue that techno-dreams of routine good-enough remote therapy are neither that innovative nor that promising. Clinical work today, and going forward into the future, can only benefit from understanding fundamental differences between remote therapy and local therapy, between technologically-mediated presence and physical co-presence. Instead of shimmering promise, remote treatment will be shown to have inevitable losses, losses we ignore at our peril. Participants will be invited to consider how a vibrant future for psychoanalysis most likely resides in understanding the limitations, illusions, and costs of screen relations. This future includes becoming fierce advocates, both clinically and culturally, of intimacies that can only be experienced when people are bodies together.
