This workshop is for mental health professionals who will be working with parents who are separated or divorced and having difficulty co-parenting with the other parent. Approaches specific to this situation will be discussed with an emphasis on helping parents do what will be in the best interests of the children. Case examples will be presented and participants will be able to describe what could be done in the sample situations. Ethical and business management considerations for this work will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify three differences between co-parenting counseling and traditional individual therapy.
- List four types of contact and communication approaches for separated/divorced parents to use with the other parent and describe the circumstances when each approach would be appropriate.
- Identify six specific tools and resources that are available to help make co-parenting more successful.
- Define five counseling interventions specific to counseling for co-parenting that you would use in the sample case presented to you.
Presenter:
Keith Jordan, LCSW has worked in the mental health field for over 30 years, as an alcohol counselor, jail counselor and as a batterers’ group facilitator. Over the course of the past 13 years, Mr. Jordan has been a custody evaluator for the Orange County Department of Mental Health, where he has conducted approximately 600 custody evaluations. He currently has a private practice in which he specializes in working with families of divorce.
The space can accommodate approximately 60 attendees.
This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
Who May Benefit from attending: social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed psychoanalysts, nurse practitioners and family and marriage/couple therapists and mental health counselors.
