143. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES OF ALBERT PESSO AND THEIR USEFULNESS FOR RELATIONSHIP-ORIENTED THERAPISTS (Mid-Hudson)

3.0 Contact Hours Will Be Awarded for This Program

Saturday, November 05, 2016

Course Number:       Location:

PRESENTER: MATT FRIED, Ph.D

Date: Saturday, November 5, 2016
Time: 10:00am to 1:15pm
Location: Health Alliance
105 Marys Ave, Kingston N.Y.  12401

This workshop, both didactic and experiential, will present the differences and similarities between Pesso’s approach (PBSP) and more relationship-oriented models, such as accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP).  Participants will learn easily applicable PBSP interventions and frames, which are congruent with many relationship approaches, and will increase their ability to track, intervene and deepen affect.  Ways to recognize the expression of unmet developmental needs, such as the needs for place and limits, and how to symbolically meet these needs during the session as well as how to heighten affective intensity during portrayals and other gestalt-like processes and how to understand and work with the key Pesso concepts of “holes-in-roles” and “ideal parenting” will be illustrated.

PBSP brings together in a unique way elements of developmental theory, gestalt therapy, psychodrama, psychoanalysis, dance and other movement approaches (Alexander, Feldenkrais), the dynamics of theatre, developmental theory, mindfulness and attachment theory. Similar to AEDP, PBSP focuses on undoing aloneness, creating safety, developing reflective capacity, processing intense affect to completion, undoing defenses and repairing childhood wounds. PBSP adds: working with touch /and/motoric expression, and the creation in the client of new, carefully designed antidotal memories, which offset original, defense-determining, family of origin experiences and the limiting conclusions drawn from them.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

1)  List  5 basic developmental needs according to PBSP

2)  Compare and contrast the PBSP technique of “witnessing” with the empathic/sympathetic verbalizations of relational therapy

3)  Describe the syntactic form of “ideal parent” statements

4)  Identify  “symbolic historical reversals” which would follow from a list of unmet developmental needs
