This presentation will explore the impact of the psychoanalytic psychotherapist’s life experience and psychological make-up on the treatment. By expanding study beyond theory and technique to include an examination of events in the clinician’s childhood and adult life as well as related psychodynamic issues, participants will have an opportunity to focus on ways in which these experiences, crises, and dynamics affect both clinical choices and the tenor of the therapist’s presence in the consulting room. We will also explore areas of overlap and differentiation between two phenomena that are often confused: the larger issue of the therapist’s subjectivity, and self-disclosure.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
1. Identify at least two ways in which their life experience affected a theoretical choice or clinical intervention that they made.
2. List 2-3 reasons why it is important to track their subjective responses to patients.
3. Provide at least one example of how identifying a moment in which an aspect of their subjectivity impacted a clinical choice led to a therapeutic gain.
The presenter will utilize a didactic presentation to increase participants’ knowledge, enhance learning and develop a greater understanding of a psychotherapist's mind and the impact of subjectivity on patients and treatment. There will be an opportunity for questions and discussion with presenter.
