There’s an old adage that many people would prefer to be dead than to engage in public speaking. Performance anxiety is a ubiquitous  and  most human phenomena which manifests itself  in a variety of ways including  stage fright, fear of public speaking,  writers block,  rumination, procrastination,  inability to concentrate,  shyness,  fear of  intimacy.  Many of our patients come to us with varying symptoms of this problem, and often, we as therapists suffer with it as well. The therapeutic relationship is in itself a kind of play, and as such is a  vehicle for the expression and amelioration of performance anxiety.  This presentation will discuss the underlying issues which fuel performance anxiety, most especially fear of shame, as well as   methods to alleviate it, and ways  to cultivate and enhance peak performance. The presentation will provide opportunities to engage in the  experience of performance, so as to provide first hand visceral knowledge of the challenges and pleasures of being “in the spotlight.”

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain performance paradoxes and solutions

  2. Describe the essential elements of peak performance

  3. List the characteristics of flow

  4. Identify the stress response and explain how to regulate it

  5. Describe the importance of courageous vulnerability
