For some couples and individuals infertility can be the first life crisis they experience.  It changes the way they perceive themselves and their partners, and challenges their sense of the world as a fair place.  They may have lived lives where hard work produced results.  Suddenly, the rules have changed.  They may see others getting pregnant easily while month after month their own efforts meet with failure.

This presentation will include a description of the medical options available to infertile couples and individuals through reproductive technology—and the difficult decisions these options can create.   It will cover the ways therapists can help their clients make decisions, mourn their losses, develop coping strategies, and possibly change family building goals while managing the wait until they become parents.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain when it’s time for a couple or individual to seek the help of a reproductive endocrinologist (fertility doctor).

  2. Identify therapeutic interventions that are most effective in treating infertile couples and individuals.

  3. Describe how couples and individuals can move through the stages of loss/grief to parenthood.

Presenter: Carolyn Berger, LCSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  She is the Founding Board Chair of The American Fertility Association, now Path 2 Parenthood.  Ms. Berger is a Mental Health Provider and Chair of the Adoption Advisory Council, Path 2 Parenthood.  She is a Member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM); ASRM’s Mental Health Professional Group; the Hudson Valley Birth Network Therapists Group and the Adoptive Parents Committee.  Carolyn Berger’s private practice in Westchester and Manhattan focuses on Fertility, Adoption and All Forms of Family Building.  She is a consultant for New York Fertility Services, The Sher Fertility Institute, The Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center, and University Reproductive Associates.

This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
