Dreaming is best characterized as thinking during sleep. We know more about dreaming and its functions than ever before. With a series of publications I have developed what I call the organizing model of dreams wherein dreams are viewed as centrally processing information and regulating affect in keeping with shifting needs and motivational priorities. With the use of clinical illustrations the central goal of this workshop is to facilitate the participants’ understanding and clinical work with dreams.

 Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Explain how dreaming is a form of thinking and includes a wide range affective/cognitive processing
2. Track closely the themes and metaphors of the dream’s narrative structure in working with a dream in a therapeutic setting
3. Define the use of a focused approach rather than “free” association in understanding a dream
4. Identify the presence or absence of transference in the dream

Presenter:  James L. Fosshage, Ph.D., ABPP is a Co-founder, Board Director and Faculty, National Institute for the Psychotherapies; Faculty Member and Supervisor at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity and Clinical Professor of Psychology at the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.
