Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive behavioral treatment that was originally developed to treat chronically suicidal individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. It is now recognized as the gold standard psychological treatment for this population. In addition, research has shown that it is effective in treating a wide range of other disorders such as substance dependence, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and eating disorders.

This presentation  will cover the standard components of DBT  including; the biosocial theory and conceptual framework underlying DBT; its distinction from other forms of cognitive-behavioral therapy in terms of its emphasis on core mindfulness skills, dialectics, and validation of emotional states; all skills taught throughout group and individual treatment; the prioritization of treatment targets, as well as the stages of treatment and a brief review of the research.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of participating in this presentation, participants will be able to:

1)  Describe the key elements of the biosocial theory underlying DBT.

2)  List the five essential elements or modes of treatment involved in a
     comprehensive DBT program.

3)  List and describe the four modules that are included in a DBT skills group.

4)  List core DBT assumptions about  clients and describe how these
might be used to guide treatment.

5)  Practice mindfulness exercises during the  training, and then be able
to describe how mindfulness practice can be effectively incorporated into
strategies to use with clients (and themselves in this challenging work).

Presenters:

Simone Andrews, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist currently provides therapy to adults receiving mental health services within the South Richmond Outpatient Department at South Beach Psychiatric Center.   Soon after becoming a part of the team at South Richmond, Dr. Andrews began introducing DBT treatment to the clinic, which now offers a full DBT program that she oversees.  When Dr. Andrews is not working full time with adults, she provides trainings throughout the year to foster parents, which is a link to her roots in working with children and families.  She has had the benefit for developing a life span perspective to treatment given her introduction to mental health began with children and families within community based agencies located in ethnically diverse and rich neighborhoods throughout New York City.  Working with a wide and varied population, Dr. Andrews has found adopting a strength-based perspective to theory and practice has been a common thread in providing treatment across the life span.

Gene Kaplan , LCSW has been involved in the creation and delivery of professional continuing education programs for more than 35 years. His main area of interest has been effective, evidence-based treatments for the most challenging, multi-problem behavioral health clients. He is currently the Implementation Leader for the development of an agency-wide, inpatient and outpatient Dialectical Therapy Program at South Beach Psychiatric Center. He has developed a team of Behavioral Tech-trained clinicians, and led the implementation of a DBT program that would become an integral component of the Center’s integrated inpatient and outpatient system of care. Mr. Kaplan completed the DBT Intensive Seminar, which he arranged to co-host at South Beach with Behavioral Tech (Dr. Marsha Linehan’s group), in 2013. He has been providing DBT services to individual clients and in DBT skills groups since then, and has continued to develop additional professional training opportunities for all levels of the Center’s clinical and direct-care staff.

This program is intended for licensed clinicians at all levels of experience  who work with multi-problem, dysregulated clients.  The program is not intended for those who have completed a Behavioral Tech – sponsored full day, Foundational, or Intensive DBT Seminar.

The space can accommodate approximately 40 people
