This program will illustrate various aspects of systems theory as it relates to and applies to couples. Participants will learn how in systems the sum of theparts is greater than the whole and how to apply this knowledge to couples. Drawing/ram the work of Judith Siegel and Susan Johnson the presenter will discuss how todevelop guidelinesfor conducting a couples session and ways tocreate safety and toform a strong working alliance. The presenter will highlight the importance of examining thefamily of origin in order to understand eachperson 's attachment history. Ways to identify the individual 's attachment style will be discussed and examples todemonstrate how the individual attachment style influences the couple's relationship will beprovided. Techniques to incorporate the influence of emotion as apowerful tool in session will be underscored. Participants will learn how to use a genogram as a tool to organize familial information.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this lecture/workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of genograms byconstructing 2 to 3 generation genograms.
  2. Participants will be able to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of systems theory by describing couples in terms of distance, conflict triangles and homeostasis.
  3. Participants will be able to describe three major attachment styles.
  4. Participants will be able to provide a brief example of a couple session in which they demonstrate three components of creating an alliance and safety.

PRESENTER: 
Janice Gross, LCSW has advanced clinical training in couples and family therapy from the Ackerman Institute for the Family, from the New York Center for Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and from the International Institute for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. She has been a faculty member of SUNY Binghamton, NYU School of Social Workand the College of Staten Island, School of Social Work. Ms. Gross also was a field instructor for NYU and Columbia University. She has over 30 years experience and maintains a full time practice in Staten Island where she treats couples,families and adolescents.

This seminar is appropriate for clinicians with all levels of experience.
